Why Stop Smoking?
Sometimes I ask a smoker if they have ever tried quitting and how long did they manage to quit for. A few will say “why stop smoking?”. This makes me laugh out loud very hard!
There are a billion reasons to stop smoking, most of us know this, and you can find a selection of many of them on this site. But why would a smoker say that, why would they question the value of stopping smoking?
These Types Of Smokers Are Ignorant Of The Dangers
These specific smokers seem to be ignorant of the dangers of smoking and the fact that it is the single biggest cause of premature death in the world. Many of them have countered this statement with “you only live once” or “you could die tomorrow” etc.
There is truth to what they say but it is still ignorance in the face of the dangers of smoking. Apart from premature death, smoking also causes or is a co-factor in many different debilitating diseases and conditions. Every smoker has a body that is ravaged by what they inhale every day. Most are at a normal weight but look carefully and while you can’t see the damage done to the organs of the body, you can see the damage done to a smoker’s outer appearance.
The typical smoker will have wrinkled and discoloured skin, low quality hair, bad breath, stained fingers and a loud cough.
Is the perceived “pleasure” of cigarettes worth the health problems that you are guaranteed?
So Why Are Smokers Ignorant?
Smokers aren’t bad people. I’m sure that most of them weren’t ignorant before they started smoking. So why now? It’s simply the addiction that is causing them to be ignorant, to have a false sense of logic and to have strange mood swings.
Imagine a crack addict or a heroin addict. Would you trust one to babysit your child? Of course not! A smoker is not so different. Of course, I would trust a smoker to babysit a child because cigarettes are legal and easy to come by so it does not have the baggage of social destruction that other narcotics do.
But imagine if cigarettes were suddenly made illegal. Imagine how smokers would react. Because they would now be illegal, the price of them would soar and they would only be available on the black market. People probably would lie, cheat and steal just like the heroin junkies do today.
Cigarette smokers are addicts and this is the only reason why they might ask “why stop smoking?”. They can try to justify it but it simply looks pathetic. If you’re a smoker and reading this, I sure hope that you don’t say “why stop smoking?” anymore!
